Garlic Prawn Spaghetti Bites July 22, 2025July 22, 2025 FacebookTweetPin5Email Bite-size Party Appetisers: Spaghetti might not be the first thing that springs to mind when you’re planning bite-size party appetisers- but it absolutely should be. It’s familiar, comforting, and already sitting in most pantries- so why not give it a bit of a glow-up and surprise your guests with mini party appetisers that are a little unexpected? When you think of pasta, you probably picture big plates and second helpings, not elegant little bites. But with just a tweak in presentation, spaghetti becomes the kind of appetiser that turns heads. Twirl it into neat nests, serve it in spoons, glasses, or even on tiny forks, and suddenly you’ve got something playful, practical, and totally crowd-pleasing. I have paired these bite-size party appetisers with garlic prawns and a creamy, tangy sour cream sauce. The sour cream keeps it light and fresh- so it doesn’t feel too heavy for a starter- and the prawns add that little bit of luxe. People remember bites that are presented a little differently. But if I am totally honest, prawns weren’t my 1st choice for pairing either. I planned to make these mini pasta bites with lobster tail, but the gentleman in front of me at the deli got the last ones, so prawns were my second choice. Either way the flavours were delicious, finishing them off with a shower of fresh herbs, a pinch of chilli flakes for heat, toasted breadcrumbs for crunch, and, of course, a generous grating of Parmesan. Honestly, it’s hard not to eat them all as you’re plating them up. …and with the aroma of garlic butter in the air, bodies appeared out of the woodwork! That crispy breadcrumb and cheese combo with the creamy sauce is wildly addictive. And if you’re feeling a little fancy? Use coloured spaghetti– squid ink for drama, beetroot for a pop of pink, spinach for a soft green. I ended up going with spinach noodles & sundried tomato noodles that I picked up from a boutique supermarket somewhere. Not only does it add interest & look beautiful on the plate, but it makes a simple pasta dish feel thoughtful and festive. It’s a tiny change that makes a lasting imprint. These bite-size party appetisers are a hit with just about everyone- adults love the nostalgic comfort, tell me what kid doesn’t love spaghetti! I probably made these a little large for one mouthful, truth be told, but it’s a clever way to bring a comfort food classic into a party setting without it feeling out of place. You too can dress it up, make it miniature, and turn this everyday staple into the star of the appetiser scene. You might have to get your hands dirty in this one! Garlic Prawn Spaghetti Bites (Serves 12 Prep 30 Mins) You Will Need: Coloured Spaghetti Use beetroot, spinach, sun-dried tomato or squid ink spaghetti for a visual twist. These options not only add colour but subtle flavour notes that complement the dish. Regular spaghetti works too- just make sure it’s good quality for the best bite. You may have to go to a specialty supermarket to source coloured varieties. Butter Unsalted butter gives you control over the seasoning. It forms the base of your garlic prawn sauce and adds richness and gloss to the finished dish. Garlic Fresh garlic, finely chopped or minced. It’s the flavour backbone of this dish, bringing warmth and depth to the prawns and sauce. Prawns Raw, peeled prawns (tail off or on, depending on presentation). Medium-sized prawns work well- they’re quick to cook and easy to nestle into the pasta. Fresh or thawed frozen prawns are both fine. Parsley Flat-leaf (Italian) parsley adds freshness and colour. It’s stirred into the sauce and also used to garnish, balancing the creamy elements with a light herbal lift. Sour Cream Adds a tangy, creamy richness to the pasta sauce without making it feel too heavy. Use full-fat for the smoothest result. Salt Sea salt or kosher salt to season both the pasta water and the final dish. Don’t skip salting the pasta water- it makes a difference! Chilli Flakes Just a pinch for gentle heat and a pop of colour. You can adjust this based on your spice preference or leave it off for a milder version. Parmesan Finely grated Parmesan adds umami depth and a savoury finish. Sprinkle over the top just before serving for maximum aroma and impact. Panko Japanese-style breadcrumbs, toasted until golden for a crunchy topping. Adds texture and a little toasty nuttiness to contrast the creamy pasta. Instructions: Cook The Pasta Fill a medium-sized pot with water and bring it to a rolling boil. Add a generous pinch of salt- this is your chance to season the pasta from within. Drop in the coloured spaghetti (or your choice of pasta) and cook for 10–12 minutes, or until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking and help it cook evenly. Sauté The Prawns While the pasta is cooking, place a small pan on the stovetop over medium-high heat. Add the butter and let it melt until it begins to foam slightly. Toss in the minced garlic and stir gently for about 1 minute- just until the kitchen starts to smell warm and inviting. Be careful not to let the garlic brown; you want it soft and fragrant, not bitter. Add the prawns to the pan in a single layer. Sauté for 2–3 minutes, turning once, until they turn a soft pink and are just cooked through. They should be lightly golden on the edges and coated in the buttery garlic mixture. Lower the heat slightly and stir in the sour cream. Mix gently until the sauce becomes creamy and coats the prawns. Add in half the chopped parsley for a fresh lift and stir again to combine. The sauce should be silky, lightly thickened, and speckled with green. Combine The Prawns & Pasta When the spaghetti is done, drain it well and transfer it straight into the pan with the prawns and sauce. Toss everything together gently, making sure every strand is coated in that creamy, garlicky goodness. The coloured pasta should now look even more vibrant against the pale sauce. Load The Cocktail Forks To serve, take a cocktail fork and hold it upright over the pan. Twirl a small portion of spaghetti around the tines to form a tight little nest- this might take a few tries, but don’t worry, a little imperfection adds charm. You can use your fingers or a spoon to help shape and guide the twirl into place if needed. Lay each spaghetti nest directly onto a serving platter, still on the cocktail fork, or remove the pasta and place the fork beside it for a playful presentation. Continue until all the pasta is portioned. Garnish Just before serving these bite-size party appetisers, sprinkle each nest with the remaining parsley, a pinch of chilli flakes for colour and warmth, a generous scattering of toasted panko for crunch, and a final dusting of finely grated Parmesan to tie it all together. Coloured spaghetti definitely makes this dish more fun, but you may have to source it from specialty grocer or delicatessens. If you use more than one colour, I suggest cooking the colours separately to avoid mixing them. Any seafood would work with this dish especially shellfish and frozen shellfish is ok to to use if you live in an area where fresh seafood is hard to find. You need to use your hands to twirl the spaghetti around the fork and keep it all rolled in one direction unless you are an expert in spaghetti twirling. 🙂 You could add some anchovies to this dish to add even more flavour and a little more salt. Make sure you get a couple of pieces of prawn on your forks. To ensure the prawn is visible, twirl some spaghetti around the fork, then add a couple of bits of prawn & then hand twirl a couple more strands of spaghetti. I had some mini toasts left from last weekend, so I crumbled them over top, but you could lightly toast panko in a pan with a little butter or just dry toast. It has bright citrus and herbal notes that echo the fresh parsley and cut through the richness of the sour cream sauce. It’s also lovely with seafood- clean and refreshing without overpowering the prawns. Pinot Grigio A light, dry Pinot Grigio pairs well with creamy pasta dishes and seafood alike. It brings a subtle minerality and just enough acidity to balance the garlic butter and sour cream without clashing with the chilli. Sauvignon Blanc If you prefer something a bit more zesty, go for a Sauvignon Blanc. Think Marlborough for those bright gooseberry and lime notes, or a Sancerre if you want something more restrained and mineral-driven. It highlights the herbs and brightens the whole bite. Sparkling Wine (Brut) A dry sparkling wine like a Brut Champagne or an Australian sparkling white can lift the dish and bring a festive edge. The bubbles cut through the creamy sauce and give the presentation an elegant touch- perfect for a canapé-style appetiser. Rosé (Dry Style) A dry rosé is a versatile and visually appealing option, especially if you’re using coloured pasta. It handles the garlic and sour cream nicely while also pairing well with prawns. Choose a Provence-style rosé for something light and dry, or a local rosé with some body if you want a bit more fruitiness.
